Sons & Lovers Summer Reading Pop-Up

Hi everyone! I know it's Friday, and we said we aren't posting on Fridays during the summer but we just had to pass this on...

As per our last newsletter in April, we mentioned tentative plans for another Summer Reading pop-up. Well, in case you haven't been informed yet, it's official. The 2nd Sons & Lovers Summer Reading Pop-Up is set for this Sunday June 23rd at Revolver Coffee on Cambie Street from 1-4pm, and this year we have help from a very special guest: Sunday Morning Ice Cream! Sunday Morning Ice Cream, is all about small-batch ice cream curated and delivered to your door every Sunday. It is the product of Genevieve Mateyko and we're so lucky to collaborate with her.

We're super excited for the event and would be much obliged if you would join us too
because you made last year so much fun.

Above are the details, if you have any questions or comments feel free to contact us. Thank you and see you Sunday!

With warmest regards,

George and Robyn, Sons & Lovers Used Books

Come on Sunny Weather

Hey guys!
Since it's almost the weekend and I'd rather be outside in the sun, bike riding or drinking beer in the park, I came up with a few things I think you might enjoy this weekend.
1. warm apple sage salad. Since it's kind of, almost, sort of summer (still a bit chilly over on the West Coast), this looks like a deliciously perfect salad to make over the weekend. (via The Artful Desperado)

2. I'm a Tumblr girl at heart. I've tried Pinterest, but I just can't get into it. Tumblr is just so chalk full of weird stuff I can scroll through for hour and hours - especially this tumblr: Vintage In Colour. You may have seen my tweet, but if you love vintage images this will blow your mind. A collection of what were once black and white vintage photographs turned colour.

3. Citizen Grace. They had a pop-up last weekend over at the Chinatown Experiment and I, to my dismay, had previous engagements. However, check out their online site. I'm pining after the Army of Rokosz of Vancouver, BC. Particularly these:
4. The Gordon Smith Gallery in North Vancouver. I had to drop something off here at work and I was shocked and impressed by their current exhibition featuring all Canadian artists like Douglas Coupland, Ian Wallace, Rodney Graham, and loads more. The building is absolutely gorgeous and it's in a great location. I'm surprised I haven't heard more about this gallery because it's just stunning. It's also the only gallery in Canada that's completely devoted to young audiences with Artist for Kids right next door.

5. A Wild Sheep Chase by Huruki Murakami. My current read and first Murakami read. I'm only a quarter of the way through and I'm into it. I'm finding it to be very whimsical; it's a cross between Douglas Coupland and Gabriel Garcia Marquez. If you're not into this author, I suggest you pick up a book anyway and get to reading.

6. Coconut Oil. Seriously, I can't get enough. I use it to cook (replaces olive oil and butter), as a deodorant - I know, that sounds weird and a little tmi, but I smell like a coconut all the time and I love it - to shave my legs (again), and I'm sure there's way more uses that I haven't even begun to discover. A dear friend told me that coconut will probably be the next allergen because of how often we use it now, but that's not for a few generations. My kids and grandkids will be allergic to coconut, but at least I'll have healthy skin and nails. Here's some more uses for the miracle oil. (via The Huffington Post)

Wedding Season

Wedding season is here, and I thought we could chat about the "eco" trends that have been showing up for 2013. There are so many different parts to a wedding; the cakes, the food, the decorations, the dress (my favourite part). Then there are the gifts, the travel, the colours. So many ways to enjoy your wedding, or attending a wedding, with a slightly smaller footprint.

I'm going to start with decorations. A very noticeable part of any wedding, and can easily become very expensive, frivolous and disposable.

I love this couples use of old furniture for the bar. Great way to use something you already have or purchase something for your new place.

For bridal accessories, we at Fair JAKE have always had a special eye for. We love our bow ties, headbands, clips and boutonnieres. We are pretty excited that its one of the biggest wedding trends for 2013.

Best way to hop on this trend while keeping your footprint down? Check out what Fair JAKE does best - our bow ties made from recycled and reclaimed materials are perfect! Check out what we have in stock now.

For succulents and table dressings and center pieces, we love the idea of decorating with potted plants, rented plate ware, and natural fibers. These are just a couple ideas from couples who put some great ideas into their weddings.

One of the biggest ways to go green on the big day is in the dress. An environmentally-concious dress can be a bit more expensive, but prices are coming down as appropriate fabrics become more available. Try 100% silk, or if you're daring 100% Peace silk. If you don't want something so formal, a cotton-silk blend or hemp-silk blend are a great, breathable and elegant way to go.

Peace silk strapless sunburst pleated wedding dress with hemp-silk laser-cut lace vest and flower belt. by Lilly Nichols for Fair JAKE. See full bridal collection here.

There are so many great, creative wedding ways and trends. I'll have to check back later with more! And come post-wedding season, we are very excited to chat about the weddings we will find our selves heading to this year! Until then, hope you have fun, catch up with some old friends and dance until dawn.
