Trending: Sneakers!

Who else is tiring of trucking themselves around on heels? Sometimes you just need a day off, and that's where today's trend comes in. Sneakers, trainers, runners, and a plethora of other names with which to call these comfy shoes. Here are a few of my picks.

1. Superga Sneakers.
I just got a pair of these in Navy and I'm loving them. Originally from Italy, these shoes were meant to take you from the street to the beach. Wear them with shorts, dresses, jeans, you name it. They are super comfy and subtle enough to pair with most outfits. $70.00

2. Nike High Top Dunks.
These are bit more urban, but comfy nonetheless. Wear them with jeans while walking around downtown, out to lunch, brunch, dinner, or drinks. Actually, wear them anywhere!  Probably best with a pair of relax-fit light wash denim, but to be perfectly honest I would work them into any outfit. $85.00

3. Nike Air Max.
Another Nike pair, but after reading March's Vogue issue, I could barely tear my eyes away from Phoebe Philo's feet in her interview. Pink and yellow are one of my favourite colour combinations, afterall. They're a little bit dorky, super sporty, and just plain cool. $120.00

4. Chuck Taylors.
How could I make a list like this and not include the classic Chucks? Well, I couldn't. These guys go way back, and are still relevant to no surprise. For spring I'd go for a white or cream pair and wear them with a denim dress, loose-fitting denim shorts (no Daisy Dukes, please!), and your favourite band or graphic tee. $60.00

5. Margiela Martin Margiela Sneaker.
I know, these are a little out of price range (myself included), but I wanted to incorporate something a little bit cutting edge, and yet on trend. They're Margiela's take on the high-top sneaker, except these boast of cut-out details and suede material. They're beautiful to look at and should you pine after them upon finishing this article I'm sure you can find a great knock-off at a reliable fast fashion retailer (*cough* Zara - they do it so well!) $739.00

Happy Fashion Friday!

The Passion Behind an Art

One of my favourite things to do with friends…or by myself is to go see live music. I was raised listening to Rock, Jazz, and Blues, thanks to my father, but over the years I have grown to love almost all genres of music, and I think there is no better way to appreciate music than going to a live concert. Not only do we get to be a part of a shared experience but we are front and center to witness the musicians playing and singing their hearts out.

I think to be a musician and to publicly share your passion with so many people would be very intimidating and nerve-racking but also rewarding.  My first time showing a collection on the runway and being in the audience felt like everyone was staring and judging me, even though most people didn’t even know who I was. So I can only imagine what it must be like for a musician to stand in front of a crowd of fans. I know as a fan the amount of energy a live concert has, makes you feel amazing. Even though I know the road Kim and I have chosen for ourselves is a challenging one, I also know (like musicians) we are very lucky to be able to do what we love and follow our passion.

I have been to many concerts and festivals in my life but the most recent concert was on Sunday at Fortune Soundclub, where I saw Poliça. It was an outstanding show and it inspired me to write this post. Channy Leaneagh’s energy and voice filled the room and entranced everyone there. We had the opportunity to talk to her after the show; she was so kind and was even wearing a thrifted shirt. (So she is sustainably minded too!).

Watching that show I could tell that Channy Leaneagh is obviously following her heart and doing what she loves; it was not only incredible
to watch but inspiring to see another woman excelling in what she loves. I hope that Kim and I can continue to share our hearts and passion with the world by continuing to follow our dreams.

I believe music is one of the best ways to enjoy life and I hope that this post will make everyone immediately buy a ticket to that concert they were thinking of going to. Or even better, if you have never been to a concert I hope this has made you eager to buy your first ticket.

Clothing Swap!

Spring is here and that means its time for Spring cleaning. Its the prefect time to edit those overloaded closets and put a new skip in your step. To ring in the season of looking forward, we at Fair JAKE will be hosting a clothing swap. So this Sunday, April 14th from 2pm-6pm, bring your good condition and cared-for cast aways to Kim's for our first annual Clothing Swap. We will be exchanging, interchanging and switching clothing, shoes and accessories accompanied by sangria and snacks. The more goods you bring, the more you will be able to take away, and any items left over will either be donated to Dress for Success or Big Brothers and Sisters. So bring lots of friends, a bag full of goodies and a huge smile and we will have a ton of fun. Hope to see you there! For any more information, please feel free to email Alex or Kim at info@fairjake.ca and check back here or follow us on Facebook for any more information.
